Hello!  I am Daniel Garza, and I'm running for Mills County Sheriff on the 2024 Republican ballot.

I am running for Sheriff to fill the vacancy left by the previous sheriff.  This is something my wife and I have prayed about, and we believe this is the direction God is leading us.  I believe I have all the components needed to fulfill the duties of the office of Sheriff.

I believe in the 3 Cs of Leadership:

1. Competent -  I have been in law enforcement since 1994 serving in Arlington, TX in various positions as well as in Mills County as a full time deputy, part time deputy, reserve deputy, and as Chief Deputy.  I received several commendations from the Arlington Police Department and citizens that I had contact with there.  I was the Arlington PD Employee of the Month on two occasions, and I was the Arlington PD West Officer of the Year in 2010.  I have over 5600 hours of TCOLE training hours including Peer to Peer training, Active Attack Event Response for Leadership, Narcotics/Dangerous Drug Investigations, FEMA National ICS, and Management and Supervision training.  I am also bilingual.

2. Capable -  I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Texas A&M International University.  I have interned with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, I have a Master Peace Officer's License from TCOLE, I am a certified Field Training Officer, and I was a Vice and Narcotics Officer in Arlington.  I have served as Chief Deputy of the Mills County Sheriff's Office for the past year and have filled in for the previous sheriff due to his absence. I am also a certified jailer.

3. Committed - I have proven my commitment to the Sheriff's Office and this county over the last seven years by the way I have served here.  There are three ways to serve at the Sheriff's Office: as a Reserve, which is solely a volunteer, as a Part-time employee, where one gets paid for the time worked but has no benefits, and as a Full-time employee.  I have served in each of these ways, depending on the need of the department at the time.  I am retired and don't work out of need.  Law enforcement is a calling and what I feel God has lead me to do.  After retiring and moving here, there was an opening for a deputy, so I began my career here as a full-time patrol deputy.  After serving in that capacity for about two and half years, the time came for me to retire again.  I then served as a reserve deputy, volunteering my time to serve this county.  When the sheriff's office got two new deputies that needed to go through field training, I was asked to return to service in a part time capacity to train the new guys.  I did just that, and when they completed training, I again left part time status and returned to reserve status to save the county money while still serving the citizens.  When the department needed a Chief Deputy, I was asked to return to full duty to fill that vacancy.  That is what I am currently doing.

Plans for the future - The previous sheriff left a good department, but there's always room for improvement.  If the county begins to grow with more residents, I plan to expand the department as needed to meet the county's needs by hiring more deputies and jailers if the need is there and can be budgeted.  I plan to have more deputies trained in mental health and school safety.

Get to Know Me

I am a 4th generation Texan.  I have been married to my wife, Debra, for 27 years.  She is retired from the Arlington Police Department and is Reserve Deputy in Mills County.  She works as the Safety Liaison for Goldthwaite CISD.  We have two sons, Alex and Micah, who both attend Goldthwaite High School.  They are active in the Band and with UIL activities.  Alex wants to pursue Aviation as a career after high school, and Micah is considering Engineering or Architecture as possible professions after high school.  We are members of Western Heritage Cowboy Church in Goldthwaite.

Volunteerism and community service are important to me.  Since moving to the area, I was active with the local Trail Life Troop before it disbanded, serving as the Troop Leader teaching Christian values and outdoor skills to teenage boys.  I volunteer at the local food pantry, and I have taught an Interactions with Officers class at Goldthwaite High School.  I have also volunteered and helped with training bank personnel in the event of a robbery.  I also have volunteered several times at the concession stand during the football games and at the Mills County Historical Museum.

At the forum on February 6th, the question was asked who is being endorsed by the previous sheriff.  I and one other candidate raised our hands.  Below is a letter indicating what the truth of the matter really is.
